Your sleep is important. Not only is the number of hours important, but the quality of your sleep is important, as well. When you are looking to get a good night’s sleep, you should look to implement the following tips.
1. Set A Schedule.
Most importantly, you want to set a schedule that you will be able to follow. You want to go to sleep at the same time each night. Likewise, you want to wake up at the same time each morning. This will allow you to set your biological clock. Any disruption in your sleep or wake times can result in insomnia. Therefore, you want to avoid doing things like ‘sleeping in’ on weekends as it is only going to disrupt your natural biological clock. You want to avoid napping within 8 hours of bedtime for the same reason.
2. Always Exercise.
You want to get in an effective 20 to 30 minutes of quality exercise per day. By exercising daily, it can help you fall asleep and get the highest quality of sleep. However, you do want to avoid working out prior to going to bed as it can negatively impact your sleep. You should look to exercise a minimum of 5 hours prior to going to sleep to avoid disruption.
3. Avoid Vices.
You want to avoid things like alcohol and caffeine if you want to improve the quality of your sleep. You should avoid drinking caffeine prior to going to bed because it is only going to force you to feel awake. Not only is it going to rob you of the ability to fall asleep easily, but it will also force you to lose the quality of sleep because it will limit your ability to achieve deep sleep. Alcohol is another thing that can limit your ability to cycle through the stages of sleep to achieve a restful night. You even want to avoid eating anything within 2 hours of falling asleep as it can disrupt your sleep.
4. Sleep Until The Sun Comes Out.
When possible, you should be looking to time your sleep cycle to nature’s very own sleep cycle. Try to wake up with natural sunlight. Exposure to sunlight when you wake up will allow you to sync your body’s internal clock and it can help you properly reset it each day. Thus, by exposing yourself to direct sunlight right when you wake up, you should be able to sync up your biological clock much more effectively.
5. Don’t Stay In Bed.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are attempting to fall asleep is lying in bed while attempting to do so. The fact is, if you are having trouble sleeping, you should get up and try to do something else. That way, you don’t stress yourself out about the inability to fall asleep as it is not going to help.
You want to ensure that you maintain a cool temperature in your room. That being said, you shouldn’t have extreme temperatures in your room in either direction. You want to keep your room cool but comfortable. Also, your room should be completely dark you want to avoid going to sleep with the TV on as it emits blue light which can keep you awake.
